Baptism is a public profession of our faith in Jesus. The command for baptism can be found in Matthew 28:16-20 when Jesus say, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:19-20).
Baptism is also a sign of our union with Jesus. The Bible says, "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4). In other words, baptism points to the reality that in Christ, our life of sin and shame is buried, and we have been raised to new life.
