James 5:1-8
What does the Bible actually have to say about wealth, work, and where we place our hope? In this sermon drawn from James 5, we are confronted with a prophetic warning that cuts right through our tendency to point the finger at someone else. The uncomfortable truth is that by nearly any global or historical measure, we are the rich ones being addressed. James, writing as a pastor with a prophet's urgency, calls out those who have stored up earthly treasure, defrauded workers, and placed their security in what they can accumulate rather than in God. But this is not simply a rebuke of wealth itself. Scripture gives us examples of righteous rich and righteous poor alike, and the dividing line is never the size of a bank account. It is always the condition of the heart. The real question James presses us to answer is this: does our peace of mind rise and fall with our financial portfolio, or is it anchored in the providence of God? As we wrestle honestly with that question, we are invited to examine our motivations, our generosity, and the true source of our security.
